The Kebbi Beach Soccer Club (KBSC) were participants at the Copa Lagos Tournament, which held from 8-10 December 2017. Northernlife followed the only Northern team all through the tournament and we have these excerpts for you.
KBSC’s journey to Copa Lagos started with a 2 weeks training camp in Kebbi, during which a number of players were screened and selected to represent the Kebbi Beach Soccer Club in the tournament.
Following the selection of a 15 man squad, two friendly matches were played against the Nigerian National Beach Soccer team (Sand Eagles) whom were also camping in Kebbi. The Executive Governor of Kebbi State who has been a staunch supporter of the KBSC project graced the Friendly Match.
The team then headed to Lagos, where their first match was against European giants Arsenal BSC. The match was a spectacle, even though they lost 11-9, the Kebbi Boys put in an impressive performance. They were able to take positives from that match and won their next two matches against Gidi Sharks and Pepsi Football Academy the defending champions.
KBSC scored the highest number of goals in the tournament, but Arsenal BSC were declared winners only due to the head-to-head rule of Beach Soccer. As such they came in at second place at their first ever outing at Copa Lagos
Reacting on their feat, team’s chairman Mahmud Hadejia, insists he is not disappointed over the title miss but glad with the team’s performance, while lauding the organisers of Copa Lagos for the opportunity to participate in the event.
“I’m not disappointed at all and would appreciate the players and officials take the outcome of the event in good faith. It was out first ever outing in any competition outside Kebbi State and we really proved we are not a walk over,” said Hadejia.
“I wish to appreciate the organisers for the privilege they gave us to feature in the competition will be highly cherished. We hope to have won the tournament with the good performance of our players.
“We specially appreciate his Excellency, governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, the First Lady, our ever supportive sponsors and individual donors. We are indeed grateful.”
Indeed KBSC are a shining hope to other Northern teams in terms of beach soccer outings, we hope to see even more participation from the Northern states in the next edition of Copa Lagos.
